Title: Milk and Honey Pdf
I'm pissed by how bad this book is I've never been so certain that I would like a book only to be so horribly let down. I was so confident that I would like this book that I packed this as one of the only 7 books I brought on vacation, not even considering it for elimination. I found Rupi Kaur (after hearing her name drifting about) when I saw a breathtaking piece by her (starting with "let me tell you about a selfish person..."). When I looked up this book on amazon, I was blown away by the number of 5 start reviews. Poetry hardly ever gets this much recognition. I started to get really excited to read this book. Well...apart from the beautiful piece mentioned above, I really couldn't find anything to like about this book. I love poetry. I love traditional poetry, struxtured poetry, unstructured poetry, modern poetry, stand up poetry, you name it. I'm not a snob. My shelves are lined with just as much edgy, modern, is-this-even-poetry books from up-and-coming poets as they are lined with TS Elliot and Tennyson. But...Honestly, I find it pretty offensive that this book is passing for poetry. This reads like a 15 year old's angsty journal. The poems are relateable, sure, but that's where it ends for me. This book seems to be a series of extremely cliche sentiments about self-love, romance, social issues, etc. chopped up to look like poetry. Where is the imagery? Where is the rhythm? Where is the originality? Where is the soul? Why do people like this book?!?!Hallmark cards are better poetry. It seriously worries me that this is ... Who keeps rating this book with four and five stars? I am generally one of the most open people to defining art. But this stuff is not art. This is some of the most trite poetry I have ever read, and exemplifies zero skill of poetic craft. Hallmark cards are better poetry. It seriously worries me that this is what passes for poetry today and people eat it up. Says more about the shallowness of readers than it doe about her poetic skill.Moms of tweens and teens: preview this book before giving it to your daughter! When my 8th grader asked for this book I read the reviews and ratings and ordered it because (1) yay, she’s reading and (2) totally on board with women’s empowerment. I did not see anything in the information about the sexually explicit “poems” or graphics sprinkled throughout. There will be a page with something totally appropriate for a middle school/high schooler, then bam! you get hit with a shocking graphic or verse. (I tried to post an example and my review was denied because it was too obscene. Enough said.) Thank God I picked it up out of curiosity so I could explain to her why I was going to shelf it for a couple of years before giving it to her. There are some good messages for girls/women, but on the other hand I may never be able to eat another cantaloupe again. The quality of the writing (meh...) is not the issue here because the shock value screams out so loudly.
