K-Gr 3—An illustrated take on how seven real kids from different countries go about a typical day. Each spread introduces a new topic (family, teachers, chores, dinner, play, etc.) and dedicates a panel to each child, identified by country, with glossary words underlined ("Iran: I live in a second-floor apartment in the city of Gorgan, close to the Caspian Sea."). Lamothe was able to create the digitally rendered illustrations based on photos sent to him by the families featured (a family photo for each child is included at the end). The muted palette in combination with the level of detail makes for a pleasing visual experience. An ending spread with a night sky scattered with stars and a glowing full moon is accompanied by the words, "This is my night sky," hinting that though these kids may lead very different lives, they all sleep under the same sky. In the "Meet the Families" section, Lamothe emphasizes that "not everyone in Peru likes to play soccer, and not everyone in Japan eats fish for breakfast," smartly communicating that the work is just one representation of much larger, complex communities. Endpapers provide a visual map of each child's name and country, including a cameo of the author. VERDICT A good purchase to refresh social science and geography collections.—Melissa Smith, Royal Oak Public Library, MI "A global introduction that goes beyond the usual symbols and sights."-Kirkus ReviewsRead On Wisconsin! Follow one day in the real lives of seven kids from around the world—Italy, Japan, Iran, India, Peru, Uganda, and Russia!

In Japan, Kei plays Freeze Tag, while in Uganda, Daphine likes to jump rope. While the way they play may differ, the shared rhythm of their days—and this one world we all share—unites them.

This genuine exchange provides a window into traditions that may be different from our own as well as mirrors reflecting our common experiences. Inspired by his own travels, Matt Lamonthe transports readers across the globe and back with this luminous and thoughtful picture book.

I LOVE THIS BOOK I LOVE THIS BOOK. Just putting it my classroom library next year will provide an excellent opportunity for students to develop social studies concepts. Meanwhile, I'm enjoying it myself! It is absolutely beautiful, and worth going back to again and again. (Those are the best classroom books!)In addition to the detailed artwork depicting how each child spends each part of his or her day, the book includes a photo of each child and their families, and a map to show where they live.I like the author's note and biographical information at the end. He tells how he compiled the information for making the book, and he outlines his own day. He is almost another character, an inspiring one! Thanks, Matt, for the writing idea for my students!Highly recommend purchasing this! My 5-year-old loves this book! Since we've gotten it, we have read it countless times. She's kind of a foodie, so she particularly enjoys the breakfast, lunch, and dinner ones. It's also been great for her to recognize the letters/words of the names of other countries around the world as she prepares to enter kindergarten in the fall. She was very excited to show this to her grandpa who travels the world regularly, and he also appreciated it. Great purchase!Beautiful, detailed, engaging My 8-year-old daughter loves this book. She travels a lot and is interested in other cultures and social studies at school, and she's read this book over and over since we gave it to her, and even took it to school to read to her class because she loved it so much. She enjoys comparing her experience to the other kids', and trying to eat the food they eat when we're in their countries. The illustrations are lovely and the details included -- from real families highlighted at the end of the book -- really grab her imagination. If you have a child interested in the wide world around them and how people live in different cultures, I highly recommend this book.

The Age of Surveillance Capitalism Download

ISBN: B07MQBDBF3
Title: The Age of Surveillance Capitalism Pdf The Fight for a Human Future at the New Frontier of Power

The challenges to humanity posed by the digital future, the first detailed examination of the unprecedented form of power called "surveillance capitalism", and the quest by powerful corporations to predict and control our behavior.

Shoshana Zuboff's interdisciplinary breadth and depth enable her to come to grips with the social, political, business, and technological meaning of the changes taking place in our time. We are at a critical juncture in the confrontation between the vast power of giant high-tech companies and government, the hidden economic logic of surveillance capitalism, and the propaganda of machine supremacy that threaten to shape and control human life. Will the brazen new methods of social engineering and behavior modification threaten individual autonomy and democratic rights and introduce extreme new forms of social inequality? Or will the promise of the digital age be one of individual empowerment and democratization?

The Age of Surveillance Capitalism is neither a hand-wringing narrative of danger and decline nor a digital fairy tale. Rather, it offers a deeply reasoned and evocative examination of the contests over the next chapter of capitalism that will decide the meaning of information civilization in the 21st century. The stark issue at hand is whether we will be the masters of information and machines or its slaves.

PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying PDF will be available in your Audible Library along with the audio.

How to contest and interrupt, then contain and vanquish an unprecedented threat to the human race As Shoshana Zuboff explains, "This book is about the darkening of the digital dream and its rapid mutation into a voracious and utterly novel commercial project that I call surveillance capitalism."She provides an abundance of information, insights, and counsel that she hopes will help those who read her book to contest and interrupt, then contain and vanquish an unprecedented threat to the human race. "At its core, surveillance capitalism is parasitic and self-referential. It revives Karl Marx's image of capitalism as a vampire that feeds on labor, but with an unexpected turn. Instead of labor, surveillance capitalism feeds on every aspect of every human experience."According to Zuboff, her book documents "a journey to encounter what is strange, original, and even unimaginable in surveillance capitalism. She examines several major organizations -- notably Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, and Microsoft -- that are in various stages of developing a "technologically advanced and increasingly inescapable raw-material-extraction-operation." Her journey's ultimate destination? "Our aim in this book is to discern the laws of surveillance capitalism that animate today's Trojan horses, returning us to age-old questions as they bear down on our lives, our societies, and our civilization."Zuboff carefully explains how and why "surveillance capitalism operates through unprecedented asymmetries in knowledge and the power that accrues to knowledge." The result: "Our lives are scraped and sold to fund the freedom of surveillance capitalists and our subjugation," juxtaposing "their knowledge and our ignorance about what they know." Indeed, they know too much to qualify for freedom. How to respond effectively to the potential dangers of surveillance capitalism, to what she so aptly characterizes as "an overthrow of the people's sovereignty and a prominent force in the perilous drift toward democratic deconsolidation that now threatens Western liberal democracies"? As the material cited in her Notes section clearly indicates (Pages 537-663), Shoshana Zuboff has conducted wide and deep research to support her recommendations. If knowledge has power, and I think it can, those who possess knowledge that has the greatest power will have a decisive competitive advantage over those who do not. Zuboff shares what she has learned from others in order to support what becomes a call to action. In John 8:32, Jesus is quoted as saying, "You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Sustaining totalitarianism depends on severely limited access to knowledge but first it must be obtained by surveillance. The tone of her book reminds me in some respects of Thomas Paine's Common Sense and Rights of Man. That is, both urge their reader to awaken to a serious danger and defeat it while they can before it is too late. "The Berlin Wall fell for many reasons, but above all it was because the people of East Berlin said, 'No more!' We too can be the authors of many 'great and beautiful' new facts that reclaim the digital future as humanity's home. No more! Let this be our declaration."I am again reminded of two questions attributed to Hillel the Elder: “If not you, who? If not now, when?”This book needs a strong and forceful Editor I was really looking forward to reading this book but I read about 100 pages and put it down in frustration. It perhaps needs a better and more forceful editor because the author can't seem to decided if she want to write a flowery novel or an informative and topical book. She uses phases that make no sense and distract from the points she is trying to make. For example on Page 55 the end of the paragraph reads: "But the lessons of that day had not yet been fully tallied when fresh answers - or, more modestly, the tenuous glimmers of answers as fragile as a newborn's translucent skin-rose to the surface of the world's attention gliding on scented ribbons of Spanish lavender and vanilla." I expect to see this in a Romance novel not a book on Surveillance Capitalism. By eliminating such indulgences the book could be half the length, more focused and certainly more powerful. I am sure it is an important topic but in the end I did not finish it. I will wait for a more edited version that gets to the point.

Stop Doing That Sh*t Free Pdf

ISBN: B07MWD5325
Title: Stop Doing That Sh*t Pdf End Self-Sabotage and Demand Your Life Back

Author of the New York Times and international best-seller Unfu*k Yourself Gary John Bishop presents a no-holds-barred guide to breaking through our cycles of self-sabotage to get what we want out of life.

In Unfu*k Yourself, Gary John Bishop told us it was time to stop making excuses - to recognize and take responsibility for the negative self-talk holding us back. In Stop Doing That Sh*t, he builds on that message, teaching us how to stop self-sabotaging behavior.

Bishop explains how our destructive cycles come down to the way we're wired. He then identifies different types of people and the ways we f--k ourselves over: We can't save money. We land in the same type of toxic relationship. We're stuck in a rut at work. Analyzing why we act the way we do, including what our common grenades are that blow up our lives, Bishop then shows how we can interrupt the cycle and stop self-sabotaging our lives.

Authored in the same in-your-face style as Unfu*k Yourself, Stop Doing That Sh*t will help us get in touch with our psychological machinery so we learn to interrupt negative thoughts and behavior before they start, allowing us to give our attention to something else, and start to find success in the areas we thought we never could.

We can take back our lives. We may have f--ked up in the past, but Stop Doing That Sh*t will show us how to break the patterns in order to live the lives we yearn to have.

Great, life-changing book This book mayh not be for everyone. But if you want something that won't give you platitudes and cliches, this is there. Gary will tell it how it is, and it resonated with me more deeply than maybe any book I've ever read. I've read it once and am planning on reading it at least another 2 or 3 times, as there are nuggets of wisdom sprinkled throughout these pages.Great Book! - the problem and the answer is within each of us. Excellent book to read and even better to listen to the author read Audible Book. Not typical self help book. this is all about understanding the problem and solution is in the bathroom mirror every morning. its a no excuses, no one to blame, because "where does that get you?" book.Stop Doing the S!@# irreverent, in your face, no bullS!@#% style is not for everyone but speaks to younger audiences and people of all ages willing to look at themselves, others, and the world from a different perspective. Great book for parent trying to understand how their kids see themselves, their parent and life. Its a great gift for teens and young adults struggling with something, angry with the world or just trying to figure things out. I have bought and gifted 6 so far.Stop Doing that S!@#, like the author, Gary John Bishop's, first book, UnF!@#yourself, is all about self assesment in a Ray Dalio radical transparency way that is blunt, sometimes painful, obvious and often DUH obvious. Bishop humor actually makes difficult self assessment process fun.I highly recommend it.Spot On!!! I have read both books and to say they hit an absolute home run is an understatement. This book is written with humor, but is raw and causes any person to evaluate what they are allowing in their lives. I struggle with PTSD and severe panic disorder, this book awakens a lot of why I trigger so badly and has given me tools to maybe head some of these thoughts and fears off. I read the entire book in one sitting, but I have read it again multiple times finding more and more to highlight and refer back to. I certainly hope there are more books to come!

It will make you think, it will make you pray, and it will motivate you to action.”  - Michael Youssef, Ph.D., author of The Third Jihad "David Horowitz has succinctly and wisely laid out the plans of the left to move our country away from the God given right of freedom to practice our faith as our founders envisioned" - Tom Coburn, Senior Advisor to Convention of States Project and Former US Senator  “David Horowitz understands the attacks on Christianity better than any academic—he has been in the trenches of the Left and knows exactly what makes them tick. His keen eye, sharpened by his experiences, offers the reader a magnifying glass to see how and why these assaults are so vicious and so relentless. Thank God we have him on our side. – Bill Donohoe, President, Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights

"Read this disturbing but vital book." -- Tucker Carlson

“One of the most intellectually compelling and rational defenses of Christianity’s role in America." -- Mike Huckabee

"Exposes the intolerance of many atheists toward those who believe in God. As a Jewish agnostic, I think it is imperative that disbelievers not demonize believers and that believers not demonize disbelievers." -- Alan Dershowitz

DARK AGENDA is an extraordinary look into the left’s calculated efforts to create a godless, heathen American society — and how these efforts must be stopped.

It is written by David Horowitz, a Jew.

A New York Times bestselling author and leading conservative thinker, Horowitz warns that the rising attacks on Christians and their beliefs threaten all Americans — including Jews like himself. The liberal establishment and their radical allies envision a new millennium in which Christianity is banished, Horowitz argues. He says that Judeo-Christian values are at the very root of America’s democracy. Kill off such values and all of our freedoms could perish.

In Dark Agenda: The War to Destroy Christian America, Horowitz examines how our elites — increasingly secular and atheist — are pushing a radical agenda:

  • How the left trashes Christian doctrines critical to the American Republic, much like radical Islam’s war on “infidel” cultures like ours.
  • Why the left fights to keep prayer and religion out of public schools, and how those efforts fly in the face of Founding Father Thomas Jefferson’s intentions.
  • How fanatical liberals helped create the religious right by targeting evangelicals and believing Catholics and other conservatives.
  • How Barack Obama’s ultra-liberal agenda galvanized the anti-God, anti-religious left.
  • The violent and shocking manifesto of Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger who advocated the use of dynamite to promote “revolutionary solidarity.”

Filled with stories that demonstrate the mind-numbing reasons behind the secular left’s smug disdain for Christianity, Horowitz traces the history of religious liberty from the Founding Fathers to now. He shows how

the Founding Fathers put aside their own skepticisms about God and religion to write The Declaration of Independence.

Today, he writes Donald Trump’s “genuine love for his country” has galvanized Christians to fight the secular war waged against them — as the president has become a lightning rod for the radical left.

David Horowitz’s powerful new book brings vital insights into the war against Christianity and names the global radicals, leftist Democrats, and money-hungry fat cats of Hollywood and Wall Street responsible for it. Finally, a clear and sensible American voice — one that is not Christian but Jewish — stands up to the twisted

rantings of those who want to tear down faith and bedrock of American values. In Dark Agenda: The War to Destroy Christian America, David Horowitz delivers an impassioned plea for the restoration of political sanity in America, a perspective that made America great by respecting the faiths of our fathers and mothers.

Horowitz Understands the Left As an individual who wrote articles for the left and has a true understanding of their motivations Horowitz writes another insightful expose of their plans. "Dark Agenda" is an excellent book - as are many of his books. To be anti-Christian is no different than being anti-Semitic. As a Jew I know that Christianity as a worldview received most of its values from ours. It is the closest world religion to Judaism. Attacks on Christians and their values is an attack on Judaism as well and many values which we hold as true. This book explains in detail how the Left is attacking Christians and their values. Regardless of how one feels about Christianity, the concept of demonizing a group based on their religion is unacceptable. We Jews were singled out for hate in Germany which ultimately led to the Holocaust. This kind of hate should never happen again for any group.Learn about the real reason the Left attacks Christians. It is not because they understand Christianity (they don't) and choose not to be believers. The true reason is much more nefarious as Horowitz reveals. How the left and the communists are destroying America and everything that is sacred to us all Every American that is for the sanctity of life and Marriage should read this.We need to reclaim our schools.Great JobBest book yet on the radical leftist war on Christianity Few know the inside working of the communist left like David Horowitz. Not only was he raised by communist party member parents, but he was one of the principle founders of the New Left during the 1960s and 1970s. He has a powerful intellectual mind that can not only retain a great deal of facts and historical events, but he astutely analyzes these facts with an insight that is difficult to compare. He is one of the great minds of the modern world. This book should be included in the reading material of all high school children as well as university and college students. It is difficult for the rational mind to comprehend how anyone possessing a rational mind could disagree with the major themes of this most important work. The radical left is destroying the very fabric of a compassionate, orderly and Christian world with lies, distortions, violence, false history and intimidation. Perhaps this will wake up some of these stuporous minds.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. . . .

When the Emperor and his notorious apprentice, Darth Vader, find themselves stranded in the middle of insurgent action on an inhospitable planet, they must rely on each other, the Force, and their own ruthlessness to prevail.

“It appears things are as you suspected, Lord Vader. We are indeed hunted.”

Anakin Skywalker, Jedi Knight, is just a memory. Darth Vader, newly anointed Sith Lord, is ascendant. The Emperor’s chosen apprentice has swiftly proven his loyalty to the dark side. Still, the history of the Sith Order is one of duplicity, betrayal, and acolytes violently usurping their Masters—and the truest measure of Vader’s allegiance has yet to be taken. Until now.

On Ryloth, a planet crucial to the growing Empire as a source of slave labor and the narcotic known as “spice,” an aggressive resistance movement has arisen, led by Cham Syndulla, an idealistic freedom fighter, and Isval, a vengeful former slave. But Emperor Palpatine means to control the embattled world and its precious resources—by political power or firepower—and he will be neither intimidated nor denied. Accompanied by his merciless disciple, Darth Vader, he sets out on a rare personal mission to ensure his will is done.

For Syndulla and Isval, it’s the opportunity to strike at the very heart of the ruthless dictatorship sweeping the galaxy. And for the Emperor and Darth Vader, Ryloth becomes more than just a matter of putting down an insurrection: When an ambush sends them crashing to the planet’s surface, where inhospitable terrain and an army of resistance fighters await them, they will find their relationship tested as never before. With only their lightsabers, the dark side of the Force, and each other to depend on, the two Sith must decide if the brutal bond they share will make them victorious allies or lethal adversaries.

Praise for Lords of the Sith

“Packed with action . . . hard to put down.”—Seattle Geekly

Poorly written, plagued with major inconsistencies and falls flat on its face in the second half - Mediocre book. As some reviewers mentioned, there are unforgivable, major inconsistencies - Vader igniting his light saber a few lines after he ignited it and then deactivating it twice in a row. Or a protagonist using his comm to keep in contact with people including one that was right besides him in the previous paragraph and is with him again a few lines later, having never left his side.Although extremely irritating and an indication that the author did not or could not revise his work due to deadlines, that alone could be forgiven if the story was awesome or the author was a gifted writer. But the work is of mediocre quality and the author constantly uses the same images and formulas. To top it all, the story that starts out as exciting pretty much falls flat on its face midway through - boring action sequences have the rebels fighting with forest beasts, then Vader and the emperor being confronted with forest beasts too, so the whole things sounds like some kind safari gone wrong. Although such creatures are an integral part of the Star Wars universe, in this context, they just make for annoying, unexciting and repetitive scenes.Too much safari, not enough Sith...Best Novel in the New Canon Yet Spoiler free:Lords of the Sith is easily the best novel in the new Star Wars canon to date. It doesn't quite reach the height of some of the old Expanded Universe (now Legends) novels like Darth Plagueis and Shatterpoint, but it comes close and is very promising if this is the direction Star Wars novels are headed. The main characters on the "good" side show complexity, trying to stay on the right side of the thin line between freedom fighter and terrorist - the line between murder and killing an enemy. The Imperial cast is equally complex, showing the reader insight into their own drives and motivations, from the stalwart loyalists, self-centered power grabbers, the Emperor's personal guards, and a has-been moff. The new canon has done a great job of increasing the diversity in Star Wars, and this is book is no exception. The female moff, in one sentence, is said to have taken a downward spiral after the death of her wife. That's it, one word switched from husband to wife, and the reader knows that we are now dealing with a moff in the Star Wars universe that happened to be a married lesbian. However, the story does not revolve around this at all, and it never comes up again or distracts the reader from the story. To me, this is the perfect way to make Star Wars more inclusive in the 21st century - include diverse characters that reflect our modern life without needlessly writing stories about things like race and sexual orientation when they aren't central to the story. I hope this trend continues. Now, on to what we all came for: this book shows a lot of Vader and Palpatine doing what they do best. Vader is a killing machine, constantly trying to guess his master's motivation behind his words and commands. On the other hand, Palpatine is always one step ahead of Vader, and seems extremely adept at predicting his thoughts. This is a perfect portrayal of a post-prequels/Clone Wars Vader, one that is constantly reminded of those he lost. We get to see how Vader copes with his memories in a sad way. It leaves you empathizing with the character while you are simultaneously repulsed by his actions. My only quibble is that Vader and Palpatine sometimes do things (leaping, spinning, flipping, lightsabering) that are a little extreme. I like to see the Force act in more subtle ways, and it can get a little video-gamey in this book.

Title: Idiot Pdf Essays

From YouTube star and Facebook Video sensation Laura Clery comes a collection of comedic essays in the vein of We Are Never Meeting in Real Life by Samantha Irby and You'll Grow Out of It by Jessi Klein.

Laura Clery makes a living by sharing inappropriate comedy sketches with millions of strangers on the internet. She writes songs about her anatomy, talks trash about her one-eyed rescue pug, and sexually harasses her husband, Stephen. And it pays the bills!

Now, in her first-ever audiobook, Laura recounts how she went from being a dangerously impulsive, broke, unemployable, suicidal, cocaine-addicted narcissist, crippled by fear and hopping from one toxic romance to the next...to a more-happy-than-not, somewhat rational, meditating, vegan yogi with good credit, a great marriage, a fantastic career, and four unfortunate-looking rescue animals. Still, above all, Laura remains an amazingly talented, adorable, and vulnerable self-described...Idiot.

With her signature brand of offbeat, no-holds-barred humor, Idiot introduces you to a wildly original - and undeniably relatable - new voice.

Title: To Feel the Music Pdf A Songwriter's Mission to Save High-Quality Audio
Author: Neil Young
Published Date: 2019
Page: 242

“An intriguing account of Young’s determination to provide world-class audio to consumers . . . In print as in song, Young’s passion will not be quenched.”—USA Today "Part manifesto and part how-not-to manual . . . Just as when he’s taken up various ecological mantles over the years, Young is fighting large and historical forces."—WIRED"The success of To Feel the Music is in the passion Young brings to his mission to save audio. His reasons are just. His dedication bleeds from the page. And you get the feeling, despite any setbacks, he will not stop until we're all listening to music again the way it was supposed to be heard.”—Under the Radar“To Feel the Music is a fascinating tale about countless intersections: of artistry and technology, of creativity and commerce, of entrepreneurs and organizers, of the individual and the team. It's heartbreaking on some fronts and inspiring in many others. I will never listen to music in quite the same way after reading this book, nor ever again take for granted the ingenuity behind the high-tech devices amid which we live.”—James Fallows, national correspondent, The Atlantic “One of the greatest musicians of all time, Neil Young knows the effort artists put into their work so that their audiences can feel the music. In a very easy-to-understand way, Neil explains how, unlike for photographs or television, each generation of digital technology has further degraded sound quality. Neil and collaborator Phil Baker lay out concrete solutions to restore music fidelity without sacrificing listener convenience in this fascinating read brimming with passion.”—Dan Hesse, retired CEO, Sprint“This book provides backstage access to a fascinating story about the intersection of art, technology, and business. Young and Baker’s passion for their respective crafts is tangible on every page.”—Harry McCracken, technology editor, Fast Company“Neil Young is not only a rock star in the music industry. He has emerged as a rock star in championing and challenging the tech industry to deliver the kind of sound quality that he and other musicians want their audiences to experience as they do when they record their music . . . The book is a call to action for the tech industry to strive to deliver the best audio quality possible, so that those who listen to Neil Young’s songs and music, as well as those from other artists, experience exactly what the artists hear when they create their music.”—Tim Bajarin, president, Creative Strategies, Inc.“The alchemy of product development is rarely shared like this, from a music legend (and it turns out, an enlightened CEO) and a tech veteran, with refreshing candor about the highs and lows of bringing together people, materials, and energy to deliver sound as intended, straight to the soul.”—Louis Kim, vice president, Hewlett-PackardNeil Young is one of the world’s most famous musicians, with millions of followers from around the world. He’s a Canadian singer-songwriter, musician, producer, director and screenwriter. His music career began in the 1960s, when he formed Buffalo Springfield with Stephen Stills. He joined Crosby, Stills & Nash, and has recorded solo albums with his backing bands Crazy Horse and Promise of the Real. Young has recorded a steady stream of studio and live albums, now at 40. Young also plays piano, guitar, and harmonica on many of his albums, which frequently combine folk, rock, country, and other musical styles. Young has received numerous Grammy and Juno awards. He’s a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and is listed as the 34th greatest rock 'n roll artist in Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 greatest artists of all time. He continues to tour and record new albums. Young has also directed motion pictures and has written two previous books, his autobiography Waging Heavy Peace: A Hippie Dream in 2012 and Special Deluxe: A Memoir of Life & Cars in 2014. Young has appeared as a guest on many major network shows including The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Late Show with David Letterman, Saturday Night Live, The Big Interview With Dan Rather, and more. He continues to enjoy a huge following, as exemplified by the recent introduction of his new online archives, with more than 300,000 signups and 8 million page views in the first week. Young is an environmentalist and outspoken advocate for the welfare of small farmers, having cofounded the benefit concert Farm Aid with Willie Nelson. Young also helped found The Bridge School, an educational organization for children with severe verbal and physical disabilities. Phil Baker has a long career developing consumer electronic products, as well as working as a technology journalist and author. He has developed many iconic products for Polaroid, Apple, Seiko, Barnes & Noble, Pono, and others. Baker is the author of From Concept to Consumer and has written award winning columns for the San Diego Transcript, Recode, and others. Phil holds more than 30 patents and was Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year for San Diego. Phil and Neil began working together to develop the Pono Music Player in 2012 and continue to work together on other projects, including the recently introduced Neil Young Archives, an online archive of Young’s lifetime of works.

Neil Young took on the music industry so that fans could hear his music—all music—the way it was meant to be heard.

Today, most of the music we hear is com-pressed to a fraction of its original sound, while analog masterpieces are turning to dustin record company vaults. As these record-ings disappear, music fans aren’t just losing acollection of notes. We’re losing spaciousness, breadth of the sound field, and the ability tohear and feel a ping of a triangle or a pluckof a guitar string, each with its own reso-nance and harmonics that slowly trail off intosilence.

The result is music that is robbed of its original quality—muddy and flat in sound compared to the rich, warm sound artists hear in the studio. It doesn’t have to be this way, but the record and technology companies have incorrectly assumed that most listeners are satisfied with these low-quality tracks.

Neil Young is challenging the assault on audio quality—and working to free music lovers from the flat and lifeless status quo.

To Feel the Music is the true story of his questto bring high-quality audio back to musiclovers—the most important undertaking ofhis career. It’s an unprecedented look insidethe successes and setbacks of creating thePono player, the fights and negotiationswith record companies to preserve master-pieces for the future, and Neil’s unrelentingdetermination to make musical art availableto everyone. It’s a story that shows how muchmore there is to music than meets the ear.

Neil’s efforts to bring quality audio to his fans garnered media attention when his Kickstarter campaign for his Pono player—a revolutionary music player that would combine the highest quality possible with the portability, simplicity and affordability modern listeners crave—became the third-most successful Kickstarter campaign in the website’s history. It had raised more than $6M in pledges in 40 days. Encouraged by the enthusiastic response, Neil still had a long road ahead, and his Pono music player would not have the commercial success he’d imagined. But he remained committed to his mission, and faced with the rise of streaming services that used even lower quality audio, he was determined to rise to the challenge.

An eye-opening read for all fans of Neil Young and all fans of great music, as well as readers interesting in going behind the scenes of product creation, To Feel the Music has an inspiring story at its heart: One determined artist with a groundbreaking vision and the absolute refusal to give up, despite setbacks, naysayers, and skeptics.

For digital audiophiles I'm not really into rock music, but Pono was an iconic event in the progression of portable hires audio. Sadly, we are not there yet. There are lots of portable players out there now, but none of them reach the golden ring. One player that has it all, terabytes of storage, fast processing, an outstanding DAC with upsampling and filter options, Wifi streaming, and Bluetooth 5.0 AptxHD, balanced and single ended headphone jacks, and 24 hours of battery life. Pono was far from the mark, but it triggered a movement and the story about that movement is pretty well told by the authors. Pono died a sad death at Apple's hands, but the movement lives on. Now even Amazon is going down the hires download road. It's a cool book if your into high end audio. However, I agree with the Audiophile Style reviewer who took issue with some of the technological myths presented in the beginning. Personally, I loved the book even with all its faults. Reads well.An Enlightening Look at What Digital Has Done to Music Absolutely amazing book, and a great read.Another great book by NY and Pono’s Phil Baker Another excellent book by my fellow Canadian and his Pono Cohort Phil Baker. I’m an early adopter/subscriber of Neil Young Archives website ($20USD/yr.). I never bought a Pono (but wished I did at the time of its release). The NYA website is the fruits of the successes/fails of Pono. Sadly, no mention of Sony’s Direct Stream Digital (superior to PCM in so many ways). The ups and downs of bringing a new product to market. Having worked in that space, I understood A LOT of the frustrations followed by the successes. Long live Analog in a Digital Medium (read the book).
